Our Comprehensive Program

We have developed a unique and effective program for candidates of the robotic outpatient knee replacement.

Step 1 – Scan

Before surgery, a CT scan of your knee is taken to create a 3D virtual model of your unique joint.

Step 2 – Plan

Using this 3D CT-based model, your surgeon evaluates your bone structure, disease severity, joint alignment, and surrounding tissue to plan the size, placement, and alignment of your implant.

Step 3 – Surgeon Guided Robotics

In the operating room, Dr. Zimlich uses Mako’s robotic arm to remove arthritic bone and cartilage from your knee. The robotic technology allows for adjustments to the surgical plan as needed.

Step 4 – Immediate Post-Surgery Care

After surgery, our team will meet you at the Lowcountry Surgery Center. You’ll begin moving immediately and be released by dinner time with the support of our capable physical therapy team to aid in a safe and comfortable recovery at home.

Robot-Assisted Joint Replacement

Lowcountry Orthopedics is a pioneer in performing same-day joint replacement surgery utilizing the most advanced robotic-arm assisted surgery technology. The first private practice in the Lowcountry to develop this program in an outpatient surgery center setting, the Mako Robotic Joint Replacement Program allows patients to have total joint replacement surgery and return home the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Same-day surgery. What is it?

Same day joint surgery allows patients to undergo surgery and receive personalized post-operative care. Patients are released to go home to recover with our outpatient physical therapy team and home care. Patients are safely home with a plan for accelerated recovery just hours following their joint replacement.

How are the process and technology different?

Robotic-arm assisted surgery technology for total joint replacement allows the orthopedic surgeon to provide patients with a customized surgical experience. The first step in the process involves obtaining a CT scan of the patient’s knee. This allows for the construction of a personalized three-dimensional (3D) virtual model that enables the surgeon to plan and place the implant more precisely. The use of the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System brings exceptional accuracy to the surgery—giving patients less pain and more natural movement right after surgery.

Does the Mako Robotics have quality outcomes?

Expertise and quality outcomes are among the many benefits of the same day Mako Robotics Joint surgery. Dr. Zimlich is an expert user of the Mako™ Robotic Knee system. As expert Mako Robotic surgeons they employ all the advantages of the software to optimize the position, alignment, and tracking of each implant.

How is the Mako Robotics Joint procedure better over time?

The Robotic procedure combined with experienced orthopedic surgeons allows for perfect sizing and achieves a more precisely placed knee replacement optimized for each patient’s unique anatomy. The long-term result is a more comfortably functioning, natural feeling knee. The precision results in the comfort of the implant over time.

Does the same-day procedure result in faster recovery?

Dr. Zimlich’s Robotics joint replacement minimizes tissue disruption. The combination of robotically assisted surgery, multimodal pain management, accelerated rehabilitation, and a personal care team makes the recovery faster and the discomfort less.

Is the procedure affordable and safe?

The Lowcountry Orthopaedics Outpatient Surgery Center provides more affordable access to the Mako Robotics procedure with less risk of infection than inpatient hospital surgery. Thus, the outpatient Mako Robotic Joint Replacement Program eliminates the higher hospital facility fee and provides a safe environment for the patient.

How do you recover at home without inpatient care?

Rehabilitation and at-home care are an integral part of the Lowcountry Orthopaedics outpatient robotics joint program. The patient experiences seamless navigation of their at-home care with our rehabilitation and home care services.

Lowcountry Orthopaedics’ Surgeons

Lowcountry Orthopaedics is a natural fit to pioneer the Mako Assisted Robotic Joint Replacement since our surgeons have significant experience using robotic equipment and a comprehensive outpatient surgery center program in place for total knee, hip, and shoulder replacement.
