Pairing skilled spine surgeons with robotic technology

Robot-assisted spine surgery at Lowcountry Orthopaedics empowers our spine surgeons to accurately and safely use a less invasive technique than the previously required open approach. The ExcelsiusGPS™ robot-assisted spine surgery revolutionizes minimally invasive surgical platforms available to our patients. Dr. Stovall is highly trained in robotic spine surgery, a form of minimally invasive spine surgery. If you are experiencing chronic back pain that is unresponsive to non-surgical treatment, you may be a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery in conjunction with the ExcelsiusGPS™ spinal surgery system.

Robot-assisted Spine Surgery Benefits

ExcelsiusGPS™ is designed to improve accuracy and optimize patient care by using robotics and navigation. The benefits for patients include a shorter hospital stay, less tissue damage, and smaller incisions. We pair our highly skilled spine surgeon’s understanding of anatomy with x-ray imaging to treat spine conditions using small incisions. This enables the surgeon to separate the muscles surrounding the spine rather than cut through them.

The patient’s medical images imported into ExcelsiusGPS™ help the surgeon determine the size and placement of implants and creates a patient plan based on their unique anatomy. The surgeon uses this pathway, which is continuously displayed on the screen via the global positioning system (GPS), to accurately place the implants with the robotic arm. The result is more precise implant placement. Allowing physicians to accurately and safely place spinal implants around important structures like nerves with high precision translates to quicker recovery and a more natural feeling following surgery.

Further benefits include decreased blood loss, time in surgery, and radiation exposure in the operating room.
