We need our hands to accomplish most of our daily activities. “The hand is one of the most complex and beautiful pieces of natural engineering in the human body,” says Dr. Keith Santiago. “Whether the issue lies in the median nerve of the hand or an injury of the shoulder, each part of the system must work harmoniously to allow for painless movement.”
Most of the hand movements are controlled by muscles that aren’t located in the hand at all but in the forearm. The muscles of the forearm connect to the finger bones via long tendons that pass through a flexible wrist. Because of its’ unique complexity and intricacy, treatment of the hand requires consideration of the entire hand up to the shoulder as an interconnected unit.
Ms. Peebles, a current hand patient at Lowcountry Orthopaedics, felt pain in her hands that prevented her from completing daily tasks. “I had a lot of trouble with my hand, especially my thumb. It gave me a lot of problems,” noted Peebles as she remembered her condition at the start of her treatment.
Following her evaluation, Dr. Santiago suggested surgery to address the damage to the fingers. “I had all of my fingers operated on. It was a process, but they’re better now.”
