Osteoporosis is also referred to as a silent disease. Osteoporosis is a condition that causes the body to lose too much bone. This condition also weakens the bone. This condition can increase the risk of fractures. It is estimated that 54 million people in America suffer from osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis can affect any part of the body. However, it typically affects the spine, wrist or hips. If the condition affects the spine, then posture can be affected. Posture is the way that your body is aligned while you are sitting or standing. Your body is in alignment if you have the following.

  • Ribs are over the hips.
  • Ears are over the shoulders.
  • Hips are over the heels.
  • Spine and pelvis are in the neutral position.
  • If your posture is poor, then you will notice the following.
  • Weak abdominal muscles
  • Sway back
  • Rounded shoulders
  • Flat back
  • Forward head

Poor posture can result in short-term and long-term health problems. It can restrict joint mobility. It can also increase pain in your neck and lead to headaches. Decreased lung capacity is another consequence of poor posture. Additionally, poor posture increases the risk of falling.

You can perform a self-test in order to assess your posture. You will need to stand with your head against the wall and heels six inches from the baseboard. Keep your buttocks against the wall and check the distance from your back to the wall. You will also need to check your distance from your neck to the wall. Your neck will need to be two inches away from the wall.

Your back will need to be one or two inches away from the wall. There are things that you can do in order to reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Strengthening your bones is one of the most important things that you can do. You can strengthen your bones by doing weight-bearing exercises such as racquetball and walking. Talk to your doctor before you start a new exercise program.
