Tennis Elbow 101

 

Lateral epicondylitis, which is the medical term for tennis elbow, is a common problem that can cause elbow pain. Tennis elbow is caused by degeneration and inflammation. Tennis elbow pain is typically felt on one side of the elbow. Heavy gripping and extending the elbow can make the pain worse. Some patients notice that their grip is weaker.

Tennis elbow is typically diagnosed with an x-ray and an examination. In some cases, a MRI is recommended in order to confirm the diagnosis. Ice can be used to alleviate the pain and swelling that this condition causes. Over-the-counter medication such as Meloxicam, Naxproxen and Ibuprofen can also be used to reduce the pain.

You may also be asked to modify your activity. You will have to avoid things that avoid heavy twisting and gripping. However, some activity can help you reduce the pain of your tennis elbow. You can perform some home stretching exercises. Your doctor may also recommend that you get physical therapy.

A physical therapist can use ultrasound therapy in order to treat your elbow. Stretching exercises can also be used. Additionally, you can benefit from using a tennis elbow strap. The strap has to be properly placed.

If patients do not respond to conservative treatments, then steroid injections may be recommended. Steroids can reduce pain and inflammation. If all other treatments fail, then surgery may be recommended as a last resort. The good news is that most patients do not need surgery because they are able to get relief with conservative treatment methods.
